    process

The initial stage in the process of portraiture is, if possible, to be able to get to know the sitter.

Understanding the great demands on people's time, Portrait of Raje underpaintingI try to arrange a few uninterrupted hours together, talking, sketching, and photographing (unobtrusively). If I have only the use of photographs, IPortrait of Raje, detail will try to gather as much information as possible about the subject to work with.

From that visit (or visits) I make preliminary sketches working on composition and the tone of the piece. At this point, I consult with the clients for approval and commence working on a painted sketch on canvas.

I then add succeeding layers of paint, working on achieving a good likeness and capturing the mood appropriate for the piece - and person- in question.

Every piece is different as each sitter brings with them their own experience, energy and expectations.

It is always a magical moment when I am able to get to the point of saying 'Ah, there you are.'  Portrait of Raje, completed
